Steel wire raceway bearing is a special bearing for precision rotation scenarios. Featuring high accuracy, low clearance, smooth operation and compact structure, it is widely used in precision electromechanical equipment. Nevertheless, due to its special structure and relatively low overall rigidity, the bearing has an extremely low assembly tolerance margin. Defects such as misalignment, eccentricity and tilt are likely to occur. Meanwhile, affected by operating environment, installation process and maintenance status, faults like jamming and stalling may easily arise. To standardize application and reduce equipment failure risks, this paper systematically sorts out working condition requirements, standardized installation specifications and root causes of common failures.
I. Applicable Working Conditions and Application Fields
Restricted by structural characteristics, steel wire raceway bearings are not suitable for harsh working conditions with high speed, heavy load, strong impact and vibration. They are primarily used in scenarios featuring low speed, light load, frequent micro-motion and high-precision positioning where strict requirements are imposed on rotation accuracy and positioning stability of equipment. Compared with conventional bearings, they deliver smaller rotation error, superior rotational uniformity and higher positioning reliability to meet demands for precision rotation and micro-motion operation.
Currently, steel wire raceway bearings are mainly applied in high-end precision equipment and special equipment. In aerospace, they are adopted for radar antenna pedestals, photoelectric tracking turntables, theodolites, gyroscopes and precision navigation mechanisms. For measurement and control industries, they fit precision measuring instruments, optical scanning equipment and high-precision indexing devices. In military and special equipment sectors, they are widely deployed in sight stabilization systems, communication antennas, reconnaissance equipment and other devices requiring extreme angular accuracy and smooth operation.
II. Standardized Installation Procedures and Core Precautions
Eccentricity and tilt during installation represent the core challenges for assembling steel wire raceway bearings and the main source of subsequent frequent failures. Once assembly misalignment occurs, uneven load distribution on raceways will directly trigger abnormal noise and jamming during equipment operation, accelerate component wear, and in severe cases, cause permanent deformation of steel wire raceways and outright bearing scrappage. Therefore, installation must strictly follow the full-process standards including pre-installation treatment, standardized assembly, inspection and commissioning.
(I) Pre-installation Preparation
Before assembly, burrs, oil stains, dust and all contaminants on mounting shafts and housing bore surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned to ensure flat, clean and foreign-object-free mating surfaces for precise assembly. Meanwhile, dimensional tolerances of all parts shall be carefully verified, and shaft shoulder end faces inspected to eliminate tilt, bumps and depressions, so as to avoid basic assembly deviation and guarantee concentric assembly accuracy of the bearing.
(II) Assembly Specifications
Violent hammering and unilateral force application are strictly prohibited during assembly. Direct knocking on bearing outer rings and rolling elements is forbidden to prevent component deformation. A dedicated concentric pressing sleeve shall be used to apply uniform force on the whole bearing and press it into position slowly. Manual rotation of the bearing shall be performed multiple times during pressing to check for jamming or stalling. If uneven rotation is detected, stop operation immediately, re-calibrate centering accuracy before resuming assembly.
In addition, steel wire joints shall be properly arranged. The four steel wire joints shall be evenly staggered by 90° along the circumference, which effectively prevents jumping and offset when steel balls roll across joint gaps and ensures stable operation.
(III) Post-assembly Inspection and Trial Operation
After assembly, dial indicators shall be used to accurately measure radial and axial runout of the bearing, correct overall concentricity, and precisely adjust the slight preload. Excessive preload that squeezes and deforms steel wire raceways must be avoided. Upon completion of inspection and commissioning, apply matching grease and carry out low-speed no-load trial operation to fully check abnormal noise, abnormal temperature rise and jamming. The bearing can be formally put into service only after confirmed smooth operation without anomalies.
III. Root Causes of Bearing Jamming and Poor Sliding Performance
Jamming, stalling and insufficient smoothness during the operation of steel wire raceway bearings are rarely caused by a single factor. In most cases, they result from combined effects of five factors: structural features, environmental contaminant intrusion, lubrication failure, installation deviation and component wear. The detailed root causes are listed below:
(I) Structural Limitations and Intrusion of Environmental Contaminants
This type of bearing has a simple sealing structure without full-enclosed protection. Dust, iron filings, sediment and other impurities from operating environments can easily enter the fit clearance between steel balls and steel wire raceways, directly locking rolling elements and leading to choppy rotation and sticky sliding. Moreover, hard contaminants will continuously scratch precision mating surfaces of raceways, aggravate component wear and result in persistent jamming faults.
